What a jib crane does for a workstation

A jib crane is a fixed crane with a horizontal boom (the jib) that swings around a pillar or a wall bracket, carrying a hoist along its length. Within its circle it replaces awkward two-person lifting entirely: one operator positions loads from 50 kg up to 10 tonnes precisely over a machine, assembly bench or truck bed. Unlike an overhead crane it needs no building-wide runway — it serves exactly one workstation, which is why it is the most cost-effective lifting upgrade a workshop can make.

Rule of thumb: if a suitable wall or column already stands next to the workstation, the wall crane is cheaper — you are not paying for the pillar or the foundation. If the workstation is in open floor space, or you need to cover more than a semicircle, choose the pillar crane. And if the lifting point must move around the site rather than stay fixed, a mobile gantry crane is the third option — no foundation, no wall, wheels instead.

Sizing basics that apply to every jib crane

Size the crane to the heaviest load plus the weight of the hoist and trolley, not to a hypothetical future. Capacity and boom length work against each other structurally: a 2,000 kg crane with an 8 m boom needs a dramatically heavier pillar and foundation than a 500 kg crane with a 4 m boom — and costs accordingly. Measure the actual sweep you need: the boom must reach the pick-up point and the set-down point, nothing more.

The hoist is half the decision

The crane provides the reach; the hoist does the lifting. Installation, safety and standards

Jib cranes are made to order and engineered to EN 13001/FEM design rules, delivered CE-marked with the EC declaration of conformity, anchor plans and the user manual. For pillar cranes you (or your contractor) prepare the concrete foundation to the supplied drawing; wall cranes need a structural check of the supporting wall — send us photos and dimensions and our engineering partner verifies the bracket forces before we confirm the order. Plan a yearly inspection like for any lifting equipment; slewing bearings and trolleys are the usual wear points and are all serviceable.

What is the difference between a pillar jib crane and a wall-mounted jib crane?
A pillar jib crane stands on its own floor-anchored column and slews 270° (full-rotation 360° models exist for free-standing workstations), so it can be placed anywhere with a suitable foundation. A wall-mounted jib crane bolts to a load-bearing wall or building column, uses no floor space and covers the semicircle in front of the wall. If a strong wall is already next to the workstation, the wall version is usually cheaper.
Is there a jib crane that rotates a full 360 degrees?
Yes — full-rotation pillar jib cranes swing the boom through a complete circle on a floor-anchored column. Our 360° model covers 150–10,000 kg with spans of 2–12 m, optionally with motorized slewing and an electrical collector for unlimited rotation. Choose it when the crane stands free and serves machines or vehicles on all sides.
What size jib crane do I need?
Take the heaviest load you will lift, add the weight of the hoist and trolley, and choose the next capacity step. For the boom, measure the actual distance from the mounting point to the furthest pick-up or set-down point. Oversizing is expensive: capacity and boom length together drive the pillar, foundation and price.
What is an articulated jib crane for?
An articulated jib crane has two hinged arms (270° and 300° on our models) instead of one straight boom, so the hoist can reach around columns and machinery, through door openings and close to the pillar. It is the standard solution for serving the inside of machine tools and presses.
Can a jib crane be used outdoors?
Yes — the steel pillar and wall cranes in our range are built for indoor and outdoor use (models with an integrated trolley in a closed profile are indoor-only). For outdoor installation the foundation and corrosion protection are specified accordingly during configuration.
How much does a jib crane cost?
Light 50–100 kg wall jibs start from under €900; a typical 500–1,000 kg pillar crane with a 4–5 m boom lands in the low thousands, before the hoist. Every crane is made to order — configure capacity, boom and mounting on the product page and you receive a firm quote, usually the same working day.
Which hoist should I put on a jib crane?
For occasional lifts a manual chain hoist is enough. For regular use choose an electric chain hoist matched to the crane capacity — ordering both together ensures the trolley fits the boom profile and the crane arrives ready to install.
